Water and Weather permitting!
Fun Fact: The first time I ran this river at Thanksgiving we found a pumpkin on the side of the river and had both a Jack-o-lantern and roasted pumpkin seeds Sunday night.
Level/Class: Advanced paddling with random camping. While the river is up to class III in the summer, at this time of year it will likely be closer to II+. However, still with many features that can not be avoided.
Description: This stretch of the Kootenay is a scenic paddle through the Rocky Mountains The river will be very low in October until the Palliser, with significant rock dodging. We will be random camping (no services) along the banks of the river. As we will be in the mountains, plan on cold evenings and potential for wet weather. Last year we had warm days and below zero nights.
Difficulties of Rapids: There are multiple rapids up to Class II+ (III in the summer); river reading skills are required. Note that there are numerous mid river erratics with the potential to wrap a canoe.
Expected Flow: The river is currently flowing well below the lower quartile and will be lower in October. This trip is very much Water and Weather permitting!
Duration:This is a 3 day trip from Saturday to Monday. Note that we will meet at the bridge late Friday afternoon and shuttle either Friday evening or first thing Saturday morning. The vehicles will be left at the White bridge.
